Temporary Accomodation

Are you in temporary accommodation?

Tired of waiting? You could be re-housed faster than you think!

Southwark Council has a new scheme called ‘Qualifying Offers which can help you to find a new home in the private sector or with a registered social landlord. The scheme is exclusively for those living in temporary accommodation who have been accepted by the council as eligible, in priority need and not homeless because of their own actions.

Tired of waiting image In addition, your rent account should be up to date and you should not have had any reported instances of anti-social behaviour.

Benefits of the qualifying offers scheme

  • You will be offered a grant of up to £1000
  • You will have a choice over the area and type of property you live in
  • You will be able to move quickly and avoid long waits in TA
  • You may be able to remain in your temporary accommodation if it is in the private sector and even keep some or all of your furniture

If you accept a qualifying offer

  • If you accept this offer of accommodation, you will no longer be classed as homeless and the council will therefore have no further duty towards you (under section 193, Housing Act 1996)
  • You will still be able to apply for council or housing association properties through the Homesearch scheme waiting list in the normal way

You should seek independent legal advice before making any decision which could affect your housing rights. If you are sure you would like to proceed, talk to your caseworker or housing options officer and they will assist you further with joining the scheme. Or call the housing options advice line today on 020 7525 5950 Monday-Friday 9am-5pm.
